SUMMARY:Delita Martin Exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas
DESCRIPTION:Conjure\, a solo exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas will feature works by Delita Martin. Her work deals with reconstructing the identity of Black women by piecing together the signs\, symbols\, and language found in what could be called everyday life from slavery through modern times. Martin’s goal is to create images as a visual language to tell the story of women that have often been marginalized\, offering a different perspective of the lives of Black women. Delita Martin is an artist currently based in Huffman\, Texas. She received a BFA in drawing from Texas Southern University and an MFA in printmaking from Purdue University. Formerly a member of the fine arts faculty at UA Little Rock in Arkansas\, Martin currently works as a full-time artist in her studio\, Black Box Press. Martin’s work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. Most recently Martin’s work was featured in a Calling Down the Spirits\, a solo exhibition at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington\, D.C. Her work is in numerous portfolios and collections.

SUMMARY:Tawny Chatmon Exhibits at Southampton Arts Center
DESCRIPTION:2020 VISION\nPresented by New York Academy of Art with Southampton Arts Center\nCurators: David Kratz and Stephanie Roach \nArtists\, writers\, and creative thinkers were asked to consider three questions of critical importance: Our lives will never be the same\, but what will change look like? What do we want to keep as we rebuild? And what must we guard against? \nWe invited these creators to express what they saw\, what they felt\, and what they experienced during this time of pause and reassessment\, upheaval and risk\, and anxiety and uncertainty. \nIt is our hope that 2020 Vision marks one of many beginnings in the necessary process of ‘post-traumatic growth’ and positive change for our society and our world. \nNote to Visitors: 2020 Vision\, by design\, presents multiple artists perspectives and observations on all that has occurred in our society over the past year. Please use your discretion when visiting with children due to some mature content. \nArtists: John Alexander\, Scott Avett\, Mary Ellen Bartley\, Amy Bennett\, Tim Buckley\, Tawny Chatmon\, Kate Clark\, Taha Clayton\, Monica Cook\, Shiqing Deng\, Vincent Desiderio\, Peter Drake\, Richard Dupont\, Eric Fischl\, Audrey Flack\, Natalie Frank\, Elizabeth Glaessner\, Ramiro Gomez\, Andrae Green\, Matthew Hansel\, Candace Hill\, Nir Hod\, Rachel Lee Hovnanian\, Rashid Johnson\, Kurt Kauper\, Cédric Klapisch\, Adam Lupton\, Steve Mumford\, Tim Okamura\, Clifford Owens\, Adam Pendleton\, Luján Pérez Hernández\, Jean-Pierre Roy\, Bastienne Schmidt\, Krista Louise Smith\, Pamela Sztybel\, Phillip Thomas\, Justin Wadlington\, Chris Wilson\, Frank Wimberley\, Alexi Worth\, Jiannan Wu \nartwork\nEden’s Playdress: The Redemption Series\n2019\n24k gold leaf and acrylic paint on archival pigment print\n60 x 48.5 inches (framed)\nSimone and David Levinson collection

SUMMARY:Renaissance: Noir at UTA Artist Space\, Beverly Hills\, CA - Curated by Myrtis Bedolla
DESCRIPTION:UTA Artist Space is pleased to present Renaissance: Noir\, a virtual exhibition featuring works by 12 emerging Black artists\, live on UTAArtistSpace.com from June 9 – July 3\, 2020. Curated by Myrtis Bedolla\, Baltimore-based owner of Galerie Myrtis\, Renaissance: Noir investigates Blackness on the continuum of the historiographies of Black artists’ narratives that assert\, individually and collectively\, their state-of-mind and state-of-being Black. The timeliness of the exhibition is particularly significant\, as its launch comes amidst a heightened awareness of racial injustice against the Black community\, with protests occurring around the world. The show marks UTA Artist Space’s first full virtual exhibition. \nview the exhibition \nThe artists highlighted in Renaissance: Noir are Tawny Chatmon\, Wesley Clark\, Alfred Conteh\, Larry Cook\, Morel Doucet\, Monica Ikegwu\, Ronald Jackson\, M. Scott Johnson\, Delita Martin\, Arvie Smith\, Nelson Stevens\, and Felandus Thames. Their work collectively captures the existence of “double consciousness\,” as coined by W.E.B. DuBois\, where one is constantly combating the “isms” —racism\, colorism\, sexism\, capitalism\, colonialism\, escapism\, and criticism through the act of artistic activism.

SUMMARY:Tawny Chatmon Exhibits at Fotografiska\, New York\, NY
DESCRIPTION:Tawny Chatmon \nInheritance \n”Our children inherit what we don’t resolve” anonymous\nInheritance\, by Tawny Chatmon (American\, b. 1979)\, invites the viewer to look beyond the decorated and nuanced portraits to examine issues of race and the historical positioning of African American portraiture in the absence of subjugation of the “black body” in Western art. \nChatmon\, a mother of three black children\, draws from her life experiences and belief that children inherit our memories\, beliefs\, traditions\, and the world that we leave behind. Through her photographs\, she conveys a message to her children\, and to all black children\, that they are precious\, valued\, and loved. \nWhile the camera is her primary tool of communication\, Chatmon takes a multi-layered approach in producing her photographs—her process does not subscribe to conventional photography. The photographs are often manipulated and hand-embellished with acrylic paint and 24-karat gold leaf\, inspired by Gustav Klimt’s (1862-1918) “Golden Phase.” The use of gold and ornamentation in Klimt’s work evokes feelings of grace\, magnificence\, and beauty within Chatmon and has remained in the artist’s consciousness. These are the emotions Chatmon seeks to convey to those viewing her photographs. Her portraits are staged vignettes with models\, who at times are her own children\, wearing elegant garments. Chatmon experiments with various art practices and does not restrict herself to follow any set of rules\, allowing her to create instinctually and fluidly. The result is a beautiful and powerful iconography that speaks to “the disparities that continue to affect black people around the world.” \nThis exhibition presents three bodies of work: The Awakening\, Byzantine Contempo\, and The Redemption. In these series\, Chatmon celebrates the beauty of black childhood\, African American culture\, and the delicate intricacies of protecting and raising a black child in today’s world. Each series is a conversation on love\, nurturing\, and the familial bond; a commentary on the politics of blackness; the historical portrayal of the black body; and an investigation of Renaissance and Byzantine portraiture. In combating the negative stereotyping associated with natural hairstyles and adornments that are distinctively likened to black people and culture\, Chatmon glorifies various styles: afros\, locs\, twists\, and barbershop cuts revered in black communities. Embedded within the works are messages of embracing one’s beauty and cultural pride. \nText by Myrtis Bedolla. Edited by Grace Noh and Amanda Hajjar. \nInheritance is organized by Fotografiska\, in collaboration with the artist and Galerie Myrtis. \n\n\nPRESS\nFastCompany\, February 2020\nFotografiska New York is a photo museum for the Instagram era (video features Tawny Chatmon at 2:10) \n\nFotografiska New York is now open in the historic Church Missions House in Manhattan. SUMMARY:Alfred Conteh Exhibits in Men Of Change: Power. Triumph. Truth. - National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
DESCRIPTION:August 17\, 2019 – December 1\, 2019\nNational Underground Railroad Freedom Center\n50 East Freedom Way\, Cincinnati\, OH 45202\nSkirball Gallery\, Third Floor\nAdmission: $10 with general admission\, $5 for members \nMEN OF CHANGE: POWER. TRIUMPH. TRUTH. profiles the revolutionary men—including Muhammad Ali\, James Baldwin\, Ta-Nehisi Coates\, W.E.B Du Bois\, and Kendrick Lamar—whose journeys have altered the history and culture of the country. The achievements of the men are woven within the legacy and traditions of the African American journey—achievements of excellence in spite of society’s barriers. \nThrough literary and historic quotes\, poetry\, original works of art\, dramatic photographs\, and a dynamic space that encourages self-reflection\, this innovative exhibition weaves together the historical and the contemporary to illuminate the importance of these men within the context of rich community traditions. It invites visitors to consider predominant narratives and engage in the authentic stories of history\, politics\, art\, culture\, and activism. Twenty-five contemporary artists were invited to reflect and celebrate the significance of these ground-breaking individuals through their own creative vision. These works of art serve as counterpoint to the sumptuously backlit photographs and inspiring quotes\, and together honor the truth of the African American experience in history and today. \nWhile these men made their mark in a variety of disciplines—politics\, sports\, science\, entertainment\, business\, religion\, and more—all understood the value of asserting their own agency by owning their own stories. \nMen of Change was developed by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible through the generous support of the Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services. \n\nArtist: Alfred Conteh\, Portrait of Ryan Coogler\nMixed Media on Canvas\, 84″ x 47.75″ x 2.75″\, 2018

DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: April 20th\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm\nArtists’ Talk: June 15th\, 6:00 – 8:00 pm \nGalerie Myrtis and The Agora Culture present Blackface: A Reclamation of Beauty\, Power\, and Narrative. In asserting the beauty of the black body\, affirming its power — and societal and historical place\, curators Myrtis Bedolla and Jessica Stafford Davis offer a counter narrative to the racist archetypes that evolved from 18th century minstrelsy\, and its negative stereotyping of African Americans that prevails today. \nThe exhibition explores contemporary notions of black identity through photography by Tawny Chatmon\, and painters Alfred Conteh\, Jerrell Gibbs\, and Jas Knight; and offers an investigation of blackface from a historical perspective presented in paintings by Arvie Smith and multidisciplinary works by Felandus Thames.\n\nThe Redemption: Girl Enlightened by Tawny Chatmon\, 30 x 44 inches on Hahnemühle Paper w/ additional 5cm border\, Total size with frame: 51 x 62 inches\, Photography\, Photo-Manipulation\, 24k gold leaf\, Acrylic Paint\, 2018/2019
